ACT IV READING NOTES AND THOUGHTS

  • The act starts off with the witches doing some rituals and being their weird selves
  • Macbeth shows up wanting questions because he is getting a bit scared
  • He finds out that he has no immediate threats, but he will kill Macduff just to be safe
  • When he asks more questions, he is warned to stop asking so many questions
  • The witches leave Macbeth and mock his worries
  • This is where Macbeth declares that he will execute his thoughts from now on without thinking
  • Lady Macduff is complaining about her husband running away
  • She then is warned to run away with her son, but she doesn't listen and her son dies and she is then pursued
  • There seems to be a little bit of friction between Macduff and Malcolm
  • But they do agree that Scotland is screwed pretty much whether they kill Macbeth or not because they won't be good kings either
  • Macduff finds out that his family dies and vows to take revenge on the people who did it, mostly Macbeth

Macbeth has become so paranoid about his life now he has to turn to the witches to clarify his future. Him seeing the ghost of Banquo once again might signify that he is feeling a bit of guilt, but at this point in the play he could care less about the other people and just wants to keep himself alive. So now he vows to let his actions speak, with his first order of business is killing off Macduff and his family. This just shows that he is really scared of competition and even though he may not regret what he did, all this will eventually catch up to him in the near future.

RE: MASTERPIECE

This is a clarification as to what my masterpiece is about.

Previous post

So I went from sports motivation in general to trying to motivate the Righetti Football team that I was apart of for four years. I know the have potential, they just need the right motivation, so I would like to interview the coaching staff and learn more as to what they are doing to motivate. And hopefully reaching my goal of being a coach myself one day.

ACT III READING NOTES & ANALYSIS

  • Banquo suspicious of Macbeth
  • Macbeth and Banquo have a conversation of their plans, this is when Macbeth finds out where Banquo is headed so he can send people to murder him
  • Rationalizes by saying that if he doesn't kill, he will be killed
  • Then Macbeth finds some people willing to kill Banquo and Fleance
  • Macbeth then reports to Lady Macbeth, but this time with a much stronger tone, implying that he  has taken charge of operations
  • Things move to Banquo where he is killed, but Fleance was able to escape
  • They report to Macbeth to tell them that half the job is done, Macbeth is mad because he has even bigger issues now that Fleance will seek vengeance
  • Macbeth then sees Banquo's ghost and decides to toast Banquo
  • Lady Macbeth insults Macbeth again and thinks he's crazy and not a man
  • The dinner party ends bad as guests get super freaked out
  • The witches make an appearance again, but this time with Hecate, the goddess of witches and come up with a plan to tell Macbeth
  • Things go worse for Macbeth as people start to connect the dots
  • Malcolm and Mcduff then are helped by King Edward of England to fight Macbeth

It looks like Macbeth's paranoia is getting to him. It's pretty evident that Macbeth is starting to lose it. This is very similar to Hamlet, but I think there is a huge difference between them, Hamlet was just pretending and Macbeth really actually is crazy. I mean he is sort of over thinking the witches prophecy by immediately labeling Banquo and company as enemies. It's weird how he could of not thought that when he dies of natural causes or something of that nature, then Banquo's family will take over. He also overreacted too much to the deaths of Duncan and Banquo, which was exposed by Malcolm and Mcduff. Macbeth is finally getting caught up to and things are just going to get worse in act IV

WHAT ABOUT MY MASTERPIECE?

So far for my masterpiece, I know that I would like to conduct several interviews, but I do not know the questions I would like to ask. Right now I have a few people in mind, but would like to do some more research to have more variety with my interviews. I don't know how I will present it exactly, but I will focus more on that when I am satisfied with what I have in terms of the main aspects of the presentation. Shakespeare had all day to do things because he didn't have a job as far as I know, so in turn he just focused most of his attention to his plays. He was probably really busy, but most of it was because of his literature.

LOVE IS BLIND

Macbeth sees his wife as very cunning and knows what to do, but he does not always agree with what she has to say. As of now it seems like he is kind of afraid of her because he doesn't seem to talk back to her when she questions his manhood. Or it could just be a strong respect for her because he thinks that she has some valid points to make. As for the audience, I personally think she is crazy and psychotic. She seems really power hungry and her dialogue does not help especially when she ask for more masculinity to go through with the murder. That also explains why she is psychotic, she asked for poison in her breasts and I took that as she is unstable and needs some serious help.

TRYING TO UNDERSTAND MACBETH

  • the witches are super weird and seem really devious
  • Shakespeare is trying to portray Macbeth as a noble man by murdering a traitor
  • but at the same time, showing how ruthless he could be
  • Macbeth begins his ascension by being named the Thane of Cawdor
  • Macbeth and Banquo encounter the witches and wonder about what their may happen in their futures
  • Macbeth learns that he has been crowned the thane of Cawdor
  • The king along with Macbeth and Malcolm rejoice over the old thane's death
  • the king announces that Malcolm will be named Prince or Cumberland
  •  Macbeth, in an aside, talks about how Malcolm is his only obstacle to becoming king
  • Macbeth meets with Lady Macbeth and tells her about the prophecy
  • She goes crazy and says that Duncan needs to die and ends up asking to lose any chance or reproduction.
  • King Duncan and Banquo arrive at the Macbeth palace and greet Lady Macbeth
  • Macbeth doesn't want to kill the King at the moment, but Lady Macbeth questions his manhood and comes up with a plan to do it anyways.
So from the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare begins it with a weird vibe that only gets weirder as the play progresses. When he describes Macbeth's battle, it did a really good job of establishing Macbeth as a man who gets things done. To me, Macbeth seems like he would be loyal, but his great ambitions will not be able to be contained, and he'll end up doing something really stupid. To make things worse, he and Banquo meet the witches and they tell them that Macbeth will be king. This makes Macbeth more ambitious, along with being named the thane of Cawdor. I think that Macbeth would probably really struggle with killing the King, but his wife seems really out of it and only really thirsts for power. She has a lot of qualities similar to Macbeth as to getting things done, but at this point in the play she seems a lot crazier than him and she will only cause more trouble for Macbeth.

MEET MACBETH

Macbeth is introduced through indirect characterization because Shakespeare uses the slaughter by Macbeth to introduce him as ruthless and merciful, getting right to the point as to who Macbeth really is. The witches foreshadow Macbeth's ascension to the throne by murdering his fellow thanes and be sole ruler of his people. Shakespeare explains the exposition more aggressively by describing the actions of Macbeth rather than have some sort of build up, which in turn sets a tone for an even more twisted play than he ever did. Shakespeare towards Macbeth show that this will be a very violent and sadistic story and he conveys that by showing how savage Macbeth can be when need be. The main theme I believe that was shown through Macbeth was accomplish anything at all costs no matter how evil the intentions are.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST

I sort of decided to change my masterpiece from sports motivation in general to seeing what I am able to do to motivate the Righetti football team because I know they have great potential, they just need to get into the right mindset and have the passion that is essential for them to work as a team. My biggest challenge is finding the right things to show the team and have the courage to tell them that they can be more than just an average central coast high school football team.

HUXLEY'S BRAVE NEW WORLD

I felt as if I got more insight as to why Aldous Huxley thinks that the world may turn into his brave new world. He made some valid points that warn us about the possibilities, but I do not see the world how he predicts as of this moment. At first I believed that this was not a possibility, but after hearing some of his arguments, I can definitely see his theory transpire, not in the immediate future, but in the distant future. But as long as we take caution to his words we will be fine and not have to deal with the brave new world type of world.

Literature Analysis #6

Jose Sagrero
Period 3

The Great Gatsby

1. This story takes place in the summer of 1922, the beginnings of the roaring twenties. The main character, Nick Carraway, has taken a job as a bond salesman and buys a house next to the very wealthy Jay Gatsby. Nick gets invited by his cousin Daisy to have dinner with herself and Tom Buchanan. They introduce him to Jordan Baker , and they begin an intimate relationship. Jordan tells Nick about Tom's affair with a woman named Myrtle Wilson and soon after the two go along with Tom as he meets up with Myrtle at an apartment that they own together. This is a very strange party when Tom ends up breaking Myrtle's nose. One day Nick gets an invitation form Gatsby himself to attend one of his parties. With Jordan at the party, they meet Gatsby and then make arrangements to have lunch with Gatsby. Nick then finds out that Gatsby and Daisy had a relationship and his parties are just to impress her.  Gatsby turns to Nick and persuades him to have Daisy visit Nick's house in order for them to once again rekindle their flame. The two begin an affair shortly after and as Tom becomes more and more suspicious, he finally figures out that Daisy is in love with Gatsby. So in turn, Tom decides to confront Gatsby about this affair. Tom tells Daisy about how Gatsby has all this illegal money, which makes her realize that she is more loyal to Tom. As Tom, Nick, and Jordan go back home, they find out that Myrtle was ran over by a car, which turned out to be Daisy with Gatsby as the passenger. Myrtle's husband George the kills Gatsby, believing him to be her lover and the one who ran her over, then he kills himself. After witnessing all this, Nick breaks up with Jordan and moves back to the Midwest after all he had witnessed that summer.

2. The theme of this novel is to not hold on to the past because things may never be how they used to be. Moving on is what is best in some of these situations or you will see a negative that occurs.

3. The tone of this novel is very judgmental because Nick always questions the motives of his company. This is seen most in the end when he decides to leave because he did not want to be apart of the Eastern lifestyle that he witnessed over the summer.

 Characterization

1. Direct characterization- The author directly describes Tom Buchanan by stating how wealthy he is and how physically gifted he was, especially at football. Fitzgerald was able to describe Myrtle as not being physically appealing but had something about her that attracted Tom.
Indirect Characterization- The way they describe Gatsby's parties shows ho extravagant of a person he is. Nick was not really talked much about physically, but the way other people perceived him showed his characterization.

2. Fitzgerald's diction does not change because the characters are familiar with each other and are able to communicate with their natural accents with one another.

3. Nick Carraway would be a static character because he always was questioning his peers' motives and actions, it was just further emphasized when he decided to move back to the Midwest.

4. I feel like I identified with Nick because he was never really comfortable with the New York lifestyle and this relates to me because I cannot see myself in the same lifestyle because I never placed any importance on material items.

10 QUESTIONS

I have no idea who my expert is but these are the questions I have for when I find my expert:

  1. Why do we watch sports?
  2. Why do we use sports as motivation?
  3. What motivates people to spend money to watch these people play sports?
  4. What motivates someone to be the greatest?
  5. Why do they want to put their body into so much stress if they are already at the top of their game?
  6. Why are fans motivated to win against their rivals?
  7. Why are rivalry games more intense than games against another opponent?
  8. Why do we like to build someone up to only bring them down from their high point?
  9. Do we live our dreams through these athletes or even our own familiar student athletes?
  10. What is the purpose of everything that I just asked in the previous questions or what is the purpose of rooting for people to succeed?

RESOURCE OF THE DAY

I know I need like four more resources of the day, but watching this video reinvigorated me to want this project to be the best it can.

Literature Analysis #5

Jose Sagrero
Period 3
Literature Analysis #5

Brave New World

1. The book starts off with the director of the World State, giving a tour about how they have programmed embryos to do what they like. There are five classes: Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. They introduce a main character, Lenina Crowne, who is an employee of the factory. They then go to a room where hypnopaedia is introduced, this is a method used to condition the mind of the World State people to the Controllers' liking. They then turn to Mustapha Mond, one of the ten World Controllers, he talks about how they teach young kids sexual activities at a young age so they won't feel any emotional desires for human relationship. They then turn to Lenina and her friend, Fanny, they talk about Lenina's sexual life with a top Alpha, Henry Foster, but Lenina then admits she likes an awkward Alpha named Bernard Marx. Bernard is introduced overhearing Henry talking about what he did with Lenina. Then it goes to Lenina Agreeing to go to New Mexico with Bernard. Helmholtz Watson is then introduced, speaking to Bernard about their dislike for the World State. Before they can go to the reservation, Bernard goes to the director for a permission slip. The Director then tells a story about a trip that he took with a woman about twenty years before and states that she was lost in a storm and  never found. At the reservation, Lenina and Bernard are shocked when they see how the reservation is, not being used to everything that they see. They see a bizarre ritual and afterwords meet a savage named John. John tells Bernard that his mother, Linda, was saved by some villagers and immediately Bernard connects the dots and figures the woman to be the woman talked about by the Director. Bernard finds out that Linda is always willing to sleep with all the men of the village and learns that John always wanted to go to the "Other Place", the World State. Bernard agrees to take John, but needed to get permission from Mustapha Mond first. Meanwhile, John sneaks into Lenina's room, who is knocked out by taking too much soma, is sleeping as he admires her. To avoid getting sent to Iceland, Bernard brings John and Linda with him to London. When the director is ready to exile Bernard, Bernard makes his revelation. Immediately, the Director resigned and Bernard became very popular and finally embraced the World State lifestyle. John on the other hand is not fond of what the World State was all about, then one day refused accompany Bernard to a dinner. This is when Bernard loses his popularity and ends of having Helmholtz meet John, they immediately make a connection, mainly through Romeo & Juliet. Lenina, becoming increasingly obsessed with John, plots to seduce him. While they got to a room, John rejects her advances and starts cursing at her for being so loose. He then gets a call that Linda is in really bad shape, so he goes to see her. When he gets there he finds that she is still in a soma holiday as she mistakes him for a man that she had many sexual encounters with. She dies, then many pairs of Delta twins are sent to the room to witness this death for their conditioning. John outrages by this leaves then finds a person distributing soma. He decides to dump all the soma and claim that the people should be free, but instead they were about to attack him and Helmholtz, who joined in with John as well. Reinforcements are sent in to calm the crowd then the two men and Bernard are asked to go see Mustapha Mond. This is where Mr. Mond reveals what they do to people who decide to not agree with the world state and he himself talks about he was almost sent to an island himself. He then convinces Bernard and Helmholtz to go to and island themselves, but refuses to let John go with them. Instead of obeying Mustapha, John decides to exile himself. While in exile, John is discovered by some low-caste people and is subject to the mass media, He finally breaks and goes crazy, much to the enjoyment of the people. His final breaking point is when he takes soma and proceeds to have sex with women, one of them possibly Lenina. He realizes what he has done than decides to just hang himself to end his suffering.

2. The theme of this novel is that even though people try to create a perfect society, there will always be questioners and outliers who completely disagree with what the "Controllers" have to say.

3. The tone of the book is really dark with all the casual sexual relations and description of how people die. On the other hand he tries to be humorous with using Henry Ford as a god and involving such things like "orgy-porgy".

4. Allusion- The book has allusions to many of Shakespeare's works.
Dogmatic- Almost everyone in the World State believes in what the Controllers want
Euphemism- The Director tries to tell Bernard to not go to the savage reservation, but very not trying to really enforce it.
Foil- Helmholtz is used as a foil to Bernard due to their different natures.
Hyperbole- When Bernard asks John if he had eaten something to make him ill because he looked terrible.
Irony- When Bernard brings John to London, he becomes immersed with the lifestyle he once denounced.
Metaphor- Huxley uses the classes to distinguish who should be treated best because in their eyes stability in social classes is key for being civilized.
Paradox- When Mustapha Mond states to John that the need for lower social classes is essential for balance in the World State.
Rhetoric- Mustapha Mond uses Rhetoric to persuade John into believing what he is doing is good for what they are trying to establish in a society
Satire- Everyone ridicules people who look old because that's how they are programmed, This was shown with how the people treated Linda.

Characterization

1. Direct characterization- Bernard is described as short and mentally superior, but at the same time we do not get a complete feel of his character. Helmholtz Watson is described as a physically superior Alpha and many women throw themselves at him.
Indirect characterization- Bernard is shown as lonely, which implies that he does not enjoy being part of activities in the World State. Throughout the novel we see how John is a man of morals by not accepting the world state and not having sex with Lenina before marriage.

2. Huxley's diction does not change through each character because they all basically speak the same exact language, unless if one accounts for John's native language of Zuni.

3. John the Savage is a dynamic character because he is introduced as humble man who never knew the world outside his reservation. As he then sees the civilized world he becomes more angered with how they are controlled until he decides to completely end it all.

4. I really did feel like I met John because he was very intellectual and always questioned the World State and never let it control him, until the end when he realized he succumbed to their rituals. This really showed how even the most independent person can fall at the hands of a stronger being. This should serve as a reminder that we can be beat sometimes, even if we have strong wills.

Masterpiece Resources

I am still not quite sure what to research, but I feel like the following are good starting points:

Quotes
   More quotes- Brainy quotes

Some Speeches

And some videos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLsevsePhdA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NWec9atK4c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQRiT_ihDGg

Again, these are just starting points, I hope to go much more in depth about why we are so motivated by sports.

MY TEAM

I decided to finish up BNW so my literature could be of better quality. I then put the rest of my time contemplating what I think will be the essentials as to what will go into my masterpiece. As of right now I am not too sure about the resources I will need. This is how I spent most of my time, trying to see what will be the best use of my brainpower for my final project.

LAUNCH

It took me a while to find something I really want to enjoy for my final project, but I finally decided on doing something with sports. Then it took me a while to see what I could do with sports. I thought about it for about a week and a half, then I decided to do it on motivation. I want to find out what motivates players to be greater than they are or  what motivates teams to become dynasties, and also I want to find out why fans use their hard earned money to go watch these athletes play. I am pretty sure that this is what I want to do, but I am still open to completely changing my topic if I cannot accomplish what I set out to accomplish.

I, JURY

From what I found was that everyone pretty much did the same prompt, but they all did it in a unique was that was able to teach me different aspects of the characters chosen. The most common character I read about was Bernard. What I would need to include for my next essay would be: more description of a certain character, but not so much where it goes from analysis to summary, also I would need to expand my knowledge of the World State and not just the characters.

BRAVE NEW ESSAY

I decided to do my essay on what seems to be the most popular essay question.

Essay

When Kate Chopin stated that "the outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions", she was alluding to many future works that would follow this saying. Brave New  World would be considered one of these works because it has a character that fits this exact mold, Bernard Marx. Bernard is a good example because he always questioned how the World State always controlled the population. However he was afraid to speak out because he did not want to get exiled. This is why he then turns to soma to help him stray away from these thoughts.
Ever since he was an embryo, Bernard was meant to be different from other alpha's by not being like all the others. Once he grew up he decided to do the work of the World State but internally he knew that he was being controlled. This was one of the main reasons he was conforming but at the same time he was internally questioning everything. Huxley wanted to show that even when there is a way to control everything there will always be that one questioner. Through Bernard, Huxley was able to show that a movement is possible starting with even just one person.
Even though Bernard was against the World State, he still showed fear of being exiled. The warning he received from the director that he would be moved to Iceland was a clear sign that Bernard was still wary of being too outspoken. This intimidation shows that people in the World State were still very petrified of being punished so they would decide to conform to the superior. Huxley was able to show this was a big reason why Bernard was outwardly conforming but questioning internally. He wanted to speak out, but knew the consequences were too dire for himself.
Bernard, although wanted to speak out, knew he needed to be controlled, so he decided to still take his soma pills. These soma pills, although effective short term, wore off for Bernard and still had these thoughts. He knew these pills were not good for the free thinker, but was willing to take these pills so he would not be exiled. Huxley was showing how people tried to use drugs to suppress thoughts that they believed were not good for their self-conscious through Bernard.
In conclusion, Bernard was used as an example by Aldous Huxley to convey Kate Chopin's message. Bernard shows that he wants to stop being controlled by the World State, but does not want to risk exile. This is why he turns to soma, to try and ease himself to try to conform. The human race deals with the issue of conforming but internally complaining every day, they do not want to seem as if they are different than everyone else, which can be used as a warning sign.

BRAVE NEW ESSAY TOPIC

This particular essay has five different prompts so these are my strategies for each of the following:

Mind Meddlers- I would answer this prompt by stating textual examples, such as, the hypnopaedia that is used and how it would relate to something that we use to remind ourselves.

Bottled Pleasure- I would answer this question with the amount of sexual intercourse that everyone has and how it has become emotionless, also I would talk about the soma pills used to rid them of any free thinking thoughts.

Huxley’s Warning- I would answer this question by using the examples of Huxley, for example the way we treat the environment and how we now worry about it when before we did not. I would play this off into more possibilities that he showed, like free thinking.

A Difference of Opinion About Utopia- The three characters I would use are Lenina, Bernard, and the savage. I would use them because Lenina and the savage could not be any more different, while Bernard is very curious about the things outside the World State.

Three Little Words- I would question this slogan mostly because the have no identity, it is just given to them. The community they live in is just a hoax and all planned out. The stability part is sort of right, but they do not teach the people in the World State about the outside world, they would have to learn themselves.

I got this essay prompt from this site.

I AM HERE

It took me a while for me to come back from winter break, but I feel great right now and even more focused than last semester. I have begun thinking about my senior project and feel I will be fully prepared to be an expert at it by semester's end. I have not gone too in depth with my senior project, but I know what I must to for it to be great. I also expect to post a bit more often, more than required because I feel as if I need to start making this blog my very own. I am looking forward to the rest of the semester and seeing new possibilities I have with using the blog to enhance my academic studies.

WELCOME TO THE INTERDISCIPLINARITY

Big thanks to Dr. Preston for helping me choose what I wanted to research. I want to do sokmething about sports: why are they so exciting, why do we invest so much of our time to watch these men do what they do with incredible God given talent. Some useful tools that can help me decipher what it is I want to learn include: Science- what goes into the physical makeup of these athletes? How are we able to use the laws of physics to make spmething that is entertaining? Why do fans get so excited about games they do not even play in? Mathematics- What are the chances to go Pro? Or even Collegite? Why are statistics important when trying to decide who the "Greatest of all time" is? Motivation- what motivates these players to be the best? money? fame? proving to themselves it can be done? Economics- why do we spend a lot of money if we can barley make ends meet? Hpoefully by the end of this I will find the answers to all the questions I have and find out why people love to watch sports, write about sports, even have sports exist in the first place.

Hafta/Wanna

My life after High School will be very different, i believe. I will most likely be away from my parents and try to find my own way. It will be the time for me to learn what life is like. Some similarities are that I will be in school for some time, whether it is four years or ten years. People do not change in one day, so people will not change the day after high school, though they may start the process of changing. To balance the things you want and have to do is simple the most important are priority number one, then after that you see if you have time to do the things that you would like to do. I expect to be successful and not depend on someone else for support. I will also expect to help my family for the things that they have done for me.

THE TIME OF MY LIFE

Like always, I began this day with the journal topic. It took roughly ten minutes to complete. Then as a class we discussed how we were going to go about what Dr. Preston's plans. We decided that Two people from each novel would speak about their interpretations of each book. This consumed the remainder of class time. I feel as if we left with a much better understanding of both novels.

Literature Analysis #4

Jose Sagrero
1-31-14
Period 3

One Hundred Years of Solitude
Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Summary
This is the story of seven generations of the Buendia family in Macodo. Jose Arcadio Buendia, along with his wife, travels form his native land, Riohacha, to provide a better life for his family. He dreams of a golden place, Macondo, where he believes that he and hos family would be able to have a wonderful life there. He wakes form a dream and decides to found his dream city by at a riverside, in turn this enables him to mold the place in his image. Macodo becomes a town of unusual and extraordinary events, which involves the Buendia family unable to overcome misfortunes, eventually a hurricane destroys the  dream world of Jose Arcadio Buendia. Then one day a Buendia man discovers an inscription that past generations have failed to decipher. This message informs a recipient of every fortune and misfortune lived by previous generations.

Theme
A noteworthy theme for this novel is to go for your dreams, even if a problem arises always have hope that it will turn out for the better. Have much faith in what you would yearn to accomplish.

Tone
The tone of this novel is hopeful and adventurous at first. Then it becomes more depressing when the Buendia families try to overcome many hardships. Then the adventurous feeling arises once again after this newest Buendia man finds this message that had all the misfortunes of the past.

Literary Elements
Allusion- The town of Macodo is an allusion to the Garden of Eden. At first it is a place wonders,    then it becomes a place of disaster.

Assumption- Jose Arcadio Buendia assumes that his fantasy place, Macodo, will be a place of magic and tranquility.

Conflict-This conflict is about the ancient beliefs between old traditions and new ways of thinking.

Foil- Two sisters fall for the same guy: Rebeca- always takes matters into her own hands going as far as shooting Jose Arcadio when he becomes a monster. Armanta- starts out lively and energetic, but the becomes repressed and withdrawn, she never takes action.

Foreshadowing- The final reading of the prophecies was foreshadowed through the entire novel. When the author tells about these prophecies, he tries to portray how puzzled each family is.

Hyperbole- "What no member of the family ever knew was that the strangers did not take long to realize that Remedios the Beauty gave off a breath of perturbation,  a tormenting breeze that was still perceptible several hours after she passed by... On the porch with the begonias, in the parlor, in any place in the house, it was possible to point out the exact place where she had been and the time that had passed since she had left it." Although she was not completely in the right mind, Remedios was the most beautiful women to ever walk on Macodo. This Hyperbole states the beauty that she possessed.

Irony- In the banana strike, the court uses very vague examples to show that banana workers did not exist and were not "employees" of any firm. This government evasion has some consequences to be dealt with.

Motif- The bible- many characters can be allegorical of some biblical characters. The novel reflects the early days of Macado, innocent and free all the way to the apocalyptic events that transpired.

Repetition- Marquez shows a lot of repetition to the extent of possibly trying to get the reader to see this repetition. "...she had the lively eyes that Ursula had had at her age and the way in which she said goodbye...revealed the same strength of character (380)."

Symbolism- The thousands of gold fish that Colonel Aureliano Buendía makes shifts over time. At first they represent the artistic side of the Aurelianos. It would then go on to represent how Aureliano left his mark on the world.

Characterization
  1. Direct characterization is used when describing Remedios. Her physical attributes were described very detailed. It was better for direct characterization because we would not have such a great understanding of her outer beauty through indirect characterization. Colonel Aureliano Buendía would be direct characterization because he is an artist and was able to be communicated because we were told what his passion in life is and how great of an artist he was. Indirect characterization was used with Jose Arcadio Buendia because Marquez depicts him as a hopeful adventurer who wants his family to have a better life than they have now. He then becomes mad and delusional, but we learn it through his speech and actions. His wife Ursula on the other hand, had strong will power as shown when she lived the longest of he immediate family and even tool in another child as well.
  2. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's syntax does not change through the novel because it was within the same family and they learn to speak from one another. This is somewhat surprising because we read through many generations of family, but the again they are in solitude.
  3. Jose Arcadio Buendia is a dynamic character because we see him go from a hopeful family man to a mad senile old man whose brain is filled with much delusion.
  4. I don't feel a personal connection with this story mainly because I am living in a time where it is difficult to be apart form the world, mostly because of technology. I did however understand what many generations of a family had to go through with all these hard ships.

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Charles Dickens wrote Tale of Two Cities because he wanted to display the difficulties that common people faced during the French revolution. The fact that people are sentenced to murder shows how brutal the "government" was. This was portrayed with Mr. Darnay and trying not to be put to death, but he was put to death anyways. It was also able to show that there were still people to rely on, shown with the man who decided to tke the blame for him.

AP PREP POST 1: SIDDHARTHA

1. analyze the literary elements in the story and how they affect the story.
Siddhartha used allusion to his father because he was not sure if he should return to his father and accept his help or try to find his own way.
2. trace the development of Siddhartha’s character, making note of how and why he changes in his journey toward Nirvana.
His character changes because of the experiences he faces makes him better understand what he is looking for

3. identify and analyze water as a major theme and extended metaphor.
Water is an important theme because it is the main source of survival and this relates with the extended metaphor because Siddhartha is trying to survive to find his way.

4. analyze how the elements of the Hindu religion affect the development of the story.
Since this is based in India Hindus influence was great because we got insight to who he really was with a bit of background on his views.

5. analyze the structure of the story and how it influences the plot.
Structure influences plot because it grows more intense as Siddhartha grows and changes as a person.
